Making Tax Digital tools and spreadsheet preparation

Important: a spreadsheet alone may not be enough

If Making Tax Digital applies to you, HMRC expects you to use compatible software to keep digital records, send quarterly updates, and complete the end-of-year process. That means a spreadsheet on its own is not always enough.

In practice, some users may choose a spreadsheet together with bridging software or another compatible tool, but you should make sure your setup is suitable before relying on it.

GOV.UK says you should choose your software before you sign up for Making Tax Digital.

What we plan to add

  • Simple record-keeping templates
  • Spreadsheet packs for landlords and sole traders
  • Quarterly summary worksheets
  • Plain-English setup guides
  • Tools to help you decide whether software or spreadsheets suit you better

If you are just getting started, your safest move is to get organised now, understand the record-keeping requirements, and then choose a setup that works for your business or property income.
